Description

Arai et al identified factors associated with a worse prognosis for a patient with obscure gastrointestinal bleeding. The authors are from Chiba University and Chiba Hospital in Japan.

Patient selection: obscure gastrointestinal bleeding

Percent with rebleeding: 18%

Percent with 5-year survival: 75%

Predictors of a worse prognosis:

(1) age >= 65 years

(2) liver cirrhosis

In addition, some patients are found to have a malignant tumor on follow-up, which could be associated with a worse prognosis.
