Description

Tran et al reviewed reports of venous thromboembolism in critically ill patients and identified predictive factors. These can help to identify a patient who may require more aggressive management to prevent thromboembolism. The authors are from multiple institutions in Canada.


Patient selection: intensive care unit

 

Factors with a higher risk:

(1) history of venous thromboembolism (aOR 4.8)

(2) central venous catheter (aOR 2.9)

 

Factors with moderate risk:

(1) active malignancy (aOR 1.7)

(2) history of recent surgery (aOR 1.8)

(3) lack of pharmacologic venous thromboembolism prophylaxis (aOR 1.8)

(4) invasive mechanical ventilation (aOR 1.7)

(5) use of vasoactive medication (aOR 1.9)

(6) older age (aOR 1.15 per 10-year increase)

 

Other:

(1) obesity (aOR 1.25)

(2) sepsis (aOR 1.4)
