A person engaged in sport may be subjected to trauma, especially in a contact sport.
Presentation: athlete with thoracic pain over back or sides, worse with exertion
Clinical history:
(1) history of recent chest trauma
(2) imaging studies showing pleural hematoma and/or pleural effusion
(3) exclusion of other causes of pain
Differential diagnosis:
(1) pneumothorax
(2) rib fracture
(3) viral infection
