Description

When starting opioid therapy for chronic pain, the patient may be asked to agree to certain behaviors during the course of therapy.


Expectations for the patient:

(1) The patient agrees to urine and/or drug testing.

(2) The patient agrees to bring pill containers to clinic visits.

(3) The patient will keep appointments or notify the office in advance when unable to attend.

(4) The patient gives the doctor permission to contact the pharmacy where the opioid prescription will be filled.

(5) The patient agrees to only receive pain medications from one clinic.

(6) The patient agrees to not abuse drugs or alcohol during the course of treatment.

(7) The patient will take the opioid prescription according to instructions.

(8) The patient will not share or sell the opioid to others.

(9) The patient understands rules related to opioid prescriptions.

 

Rules related to opioid prescriptions:

(1) Refills will not be refilled early.

(2) Opioids that are stolen or lost will not be replaced.

(3) Refills will only be given during office hours.

(4) Refills will not be given at night or on weekends/holidays.

 

Expectations for the clinician:

(1) The clinician will provide the best care for the patient. This may include discontinuation of the opioid if there is no benefit or if there are unacceptable adverse effects.

(2) The clinician will discontinue care if the patient violates these rules.

(3) The clinician will minimize the risk of withdrawal.
