White et al proposed operational criteria for diagnosing fatigue associated with glandular fever (infectious mononucleosis). The authors are from St. Bartholomew's and St. George's Medical Schools in London.
Criteria for clinical fatigue - all of the following:
(1) physical complaints of fatigue for at least 2 weeks
(2) 2 or more of the following symptoms:
(2a) hypersomnia
(2b) poor concentration
(2c) retardation
(2d) irritability
(2e) anhedonia (loss of pleasure with formally pleasurable activities)
(3) moderate to marked incapacitation
(4) exclusion of a psychiatric cause (depression, anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, etc)
where:
• Physical fatigue was a Schedule for Affective Disorders and Schizophrenia (SADS) score of >= 3.
• Incapacity was a score <= 75 on the social assessment scale of the SADS interview.
