Eibach et al modified the Subarachnoid Hemorrhage Early Brain Edema Score (original SEBES, also SHEBES) for evaluating a patient with subarachnoid hemorrhage.
Exam: brain CT scan
Modification: Various combination of different CT levels were evaluated, each generating a separate score.
Sites for evaluation as score designated 6c:
(1) level of the insular cortex showing the thalamus and basal ganglion above the basal cistern
(2) level of the centrum semiovale above the level of the lateral ventricle
(3) 2 cm below the vertex

A fourth site was added a fourth level for the score designated 8
(4) occipital sulcus
Each side is examined separately, for a total of 4 locations.
total score =
= SUM(points for all of the locations)
Interpretation:
• minimum scores: 0
• maximum score 6c: 6
• maximum score 8: 8
• For score 6c, high grade cerebral edema is >= 5.
• For score 8: high grade cerebral edema is >= 6
The authors found that the original SEBES score was age dependent. They are valid for adults less than 60 years, but thereafter lose suitability.
