Description

Vu et al developed several equations for predicting the risk of complications after abdominoplasty. These can help to identify a patient who may benefit from more aggressive management. The authors are from Northwestern University and the University of Illinois.


Patient selection: abdominoplasty

 

Outcome: medical complications or unplanned reoperation within 30 days (medical complications include: pneumonia, unexpected reintubation, ventilator dependence for > 48 hours, pulmonary embolism, deep vein thrombosis, renal insufficiency, UTI, peripheral nerve injury, myocardial infarction, bleeding requiring transfusion and sepsis)

(1) age in years

(2) body mass index (BMI) in kg per square meter

(3) gender

(4) diabetes mellitus

(5) smoker within the past year

(6) pulmonary comorbidity

(7) hypertension requiring medication

(8) bleeding disorder

(9) ASA class

(10) duration of operation in hours
