Description

A regular user of marijuana may develop gastroparesis. This can result in a risk for aspiration during outpatient surgery.

Clinical features may be minimal:

(1) regular use of marijuana, often heavy

(2) may or may not have symptoms (gastric fullness, regurgitation, nausea, abdominal pain, other)

The presence of portable ultrasound should make screening for gastric distention prior to any procedure feasible.
