Description

Macrophagic myofasciitis (MMF) is a clinical disorder of certain etiology with clinical findings that overlaps with chronic fatigue and fibromyalgia.


Clinical features (MMF-associated clinical syndrome):

(1) chronic fatigue

(2) arthromyalgias (musculoskeletal pain)

(3) variable mild cognitive dysfunction

(4) variable psychiatric manifestations

(5) variable headaches

(6) variable neurologic findings

 

A muscle biopsy shows a specific histologic appearance:

(1) focal inflammatory infiltrate rich in macrophages, located epi/peri/endo-mysial

(2) presence of T-cells

(3) absence of significant myofiber injury

 

Complications:

(1) chronic disability

(2) misdiagnosis of a psychosomatic disorder

 

One hypothesis is that it is an immune response to aluminum hydroxide or other adjuvants used in vaccines.
