Description

A patient with hyperthyroidism may develop neutropenia due to a number of factors.

Patient selection: hyperthyroidism AND low absolute neutrophil count

Differential diagnosis to consider:

(1) autoimmune neutropenia associated with autoimmune thyroiditis

(2) drug-induced neutropenia (methimazole, other)

(3) myelodysplasia

(4) infectious mononucleosis or other infection

Neutropenia is seen in about 10% of patients with Graves' disease. Treatment of the Graves' disease corrects the neutropenia.
