Description

Histrionic personality disorder (HPD) is categorized within the Cluster B of personality disorders in the DSM.


Synonym: dramatic personality disorder

 

Features include:

(1) dramatic, exaggerated, or excessive emotionality

(2) attention-seeking behaviors

(3) seductive or provocative behavior

(4) suggestible, impressionable, or gullible

(5) rapidly shifting emotions that may seem shallow to others

(6) overestimation of the degree of intimacy in relationships

 

Complications:

(1) depression

(2) self-medication with drugs and alcohol

(3) somatization

(4) panic attacks

(5) suicidal gesturing
