It can be easily confused with Fistulina hepatic, which is edible.
Toxin: polyporic acid (2,5-dihydroxy-3,6-diphenyl-1,4-benzoquinone)
The onset is about 12 hours after ingestion.
Clinical findings associated with Hapalopilus rutilans poisoning:
(1) abdominal pain
(2) nausea and vomiting
(3) anorexia
(4) asthenia
(5) diplopia with nystagmus and blurred vision
(6) variable visual hallucinations
(7) hypotension
(8) purple urine
(9) abnormal balance with unstable gait
Laboratory findings:
(1) mild elevation of liver transaminases
(2) elevation in serum creatinine and BUN wild mild proteinuria
(3) mild lymphopenia
Recovery occurs within a week.
