Kaegi-Braun et al evaluated handgrip strength in malnourished medical inpatients. Handgrip strength can help to identify a patient who may require more aggressive management. The authors are from multiple institutions in Switzerland, Austria and the United States.


Patient selection: malnourished medical inpatient

 

Parameters:

(1) handgrip strength in kilograms

(2) sex

(3) nutritional support

 

Handgrip strength was classified as low if it is <= 10th percentile for sex.

Each decrease of 10 kilograms in handgrip strength is associated with increased risk of 30-day mortality.
