Description

Borderline personality disorder (emotionally unstable personality disorder) is one of the personality disorders. It may fluctuate in its intensity, especially in times of stress, and it may be mixed with other personality types.


Borderline" seems to be an unfortunate term since it is somewhat ambiguous. Adolf Stern introduced the term for a condition that was borderline between neurosis and psychosis and a mild form of schizophrenia.

 

Features:

(1) impulsivity and risky behaviors

(2) self-image fragile,unstable or distorted

(3) unstable and intense relationships

(4) fear of abandonment or being alone, prompting efforts to avoid abandonment

(5) chronic feelings of emptiness

(6) frequent displays of anger which may be inappropriate

(7) stress-related paranoia or psychosis

(8) mood fluctuations

(9) depersonalization

 

Complications:

(1) suicidal behavior or threats of self-injury

(2) substance use disorder

(3) eating disorder

(4) work disability
