Description

Lee et al correlated heart rate ratios with the metabolic equivalents (METs) for various activities performed by persons with paraplegia. Regular exercise can improve the health status of these patients. The authors are from Oregon State University and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Patient selection: paraplegic

Parameters:

(1) heart rate at rest

(2) heart rate during the activity

(3) MET = metabolic equivalent for the activity

heart rate ratio =

= (heart rate during the activity) / (heart rate at rest)

predicted MET =

= (2.49 * (heart rate ratio)) - 0.99

The overall correlation rate between the heart rate ratio and the observed MET value was 0.77.
