Description

The accumulation of fat within the pancreas goes by several names and may be associated with a number of conditions.


Conditions associated with steatopancreatitis include:

(1) alcohol abuse

(2) nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and the metabolic syndrome

(3) viral infection (reovirus, chronic hepatitis B)

(4) malnutrition

(5) drug-induced (see below)

(6) hemochromatosis

(7) congenital disorders (see below)

(8) Cushing's syndrome

(9) lipomatous pseudohypertrophy

 

Drug causes include:

(1) rosiglitazone

(2) corticosteroids

(3) octreotide

(4) gemcitabine

 

Congenital disorders include:

(1) Shwachman-Diamond syndrome

(2) Johanson-Blizzard syndrome

(3) cystic fibrosis

(4) heterozygous carboxyl-ester lipase mutation
