The Death Zone (Todeszone) was described by Wyss-Dunant about Mount Everest prior to current knowledge of high-altitude physiology and medicine.
The 5 zones described by Wyss-Dunant:
(1) the approach, 2,500 to 5,000 meters
(2) acclimatization to high altitude, at 5,000 to 5,950 meters)
(3) adaption and deterioration (mountain lassitude), at height 5,950 to 7,800 meters
(4) lethal/death (7,800 to 8,500 meters)
(5) ultimate (where supplemental oxygen is required), above 8.500 meters
Factors impacting the ability to survive at high altitudes:
(1) acclimatization
(2) comorbid conditions
(3) hydration status
(4) hygiene
(5) clothing
(6) supplemental oxygen
(7) shelter and heating
(8) weather
(9) nutrition
