Mazairac et al reported the composite score of protein-energy nutritional status (cPENS) for use in hemodialysis patients. This can help to identify a patient who may have nutritional needs. The authors are from multiple institutions in The Netherlands and Canada.
Patient selection: hemodialysis
Parameters:
(1) body mass index (BMI) in kg per square meter
(2) normalized protein nitrogen appearance (nPNA) in g per kg per day
(3) serum creatinine in mg/dL
(4) serum albumin in g/dL

BMI
< 23 kg per sq m
0
>= 23 kg per sq m

nPNA
< 0.8 g/kg/day
0
>= 0.8 g/kg/day

serum creatinine
< 10 mg/dL
0
>= 10 mg/dL
2
serum albumin
< 3.8 g/dL
0
>= 3.8 g/dL

total score =
= SUM(points for all of the parameters)
Interpretation:
• minimum score: 0
• maximum score: 7
• The higher the score the better the nutritional status.
• The score did not predict mortality better than serum albumin or serum creatinine alone.
