Description

Tan et al reported a clot burden scale to evaluate a patient with a middle cerebral artery ischemic stroke. This describes the distribution of thrombus in the various supplying arteries. The authors are from Sunnybrook Health Science Centre and the University of Calgary in Canada.

Patient selection: infarct in the distribution of the middle cerebral artery

Exam: angiography on the left or right side

thrombosis score =

= SUM(points for arterial segments affected)

clot burden score =

= 10 - (thrombosis score)

Interpretation:

• A normal clot burden score is 10.

• The most widespread clot distribution has a clot burden score of 0.
