Description

A person allergic to cinammon can develop a contact/allergic stomatitis when exposed to foods that contain cinammon.


 

Foods that contain cinammon may include:

(1) chewing gum

(2) apple sauce

(3) herbal teas

(4) breakfast cereals

(5) candy

 

The patient develops a stomatitis with discomfort/pain and edema. Chronic exposure can result in hyperkeratosis and a lichenoid mucositis.

 

There may also be inflammation of the oral mucosa, pharynx and esophagus.

 

Diagnosis:

(1) demonstration of allergy to cinammon (skin testing, RAST, other)

(2) improvement on avoidance of cinammon
