Criteria for Diagnosis of Intravascular Catheter Related Septicemia

Peripheral blood culture isolate

Is there pus at the catheter insertion site?

Has the same organism found in the blood culture been isolated from the pus?

Does the patient have clinical sepsis with fever, chills and/or hypotension?

Is the clinical sepsis refractory to antibiotics but resolves after catheter removal?

Have quantitative catheter cultures been done?

Is the catheter culture positive for the same organism isolated from blood culture?

Have quantitiative blood cultures been drawn from both the catheter and peripheral blood?

Number of colonies per mL catheter blood cultured

Number of colonies per mL peripheral blood cultured

Is there another apparent source for the infection other than the intravascular catheter?
