A burn localized to the head and neck can occur due to a number of causes and can have a number of serious complications. Consumer education may reduce the number and severity of these burns.
Common causes of head and neck burns in the community:
(1) cooking
(2) bleach or other household chemicals
(3) gasoline
(4) hot water
(5) welding equipment
(6) vaping
Mechanism of injury:
(1) thermal burn
(2) scald
(3) chemical burn
Complications of a head and neck burn:
(1) airway edema
(2) speech and/or swallowing dysfunction
(3) visual impairment or other sensory deficits
(4) scarring or disfigurement
