Description

A patient with sickle cell disease (SCD) may have antiphospholipid antibodies which can contribute to hypercoagulability.

Patient selection: sickle cell disease (SCD)

When to suspect antiphospholipid antibodies:

(1) venous thrombosis

(2) ischemic stroke

(3) leg ulceration

(4) major cardiac event

Testing should include serial monitoring of:

(1) lupus anticoagulant

(2) IgG anticardiolipin antibodies (aCL)

Reporting of antiphospholipid antibodies should be in titers so that the level of activity can be followed over time.
