Description

Methyl salicylate is an analgesic incorporated into many over-the counter topical ointments and lotions used to treat arthritis and musculoskeletal pain.

Methyl salicylate is contained in the wintergreen plant (oil of wintergreen)

Adverse effects of methyl salicylate when used topically may include:

(1) irritant to skin or mucous membranes

(2) allergic contact dermatitis

(3) anaphylaxis

Systemic absorption of methyl salicylate can occur and can potentially lead to systemic toxicity with:

(1) use of a formulation with a high concentration of methyl salicylate

(2) application over a large surface area

(3) frequent and repeated use

(4) abrasions or a large area with breaks in the skin barrier

Ingestion of a topical solution or lotion results in rapid salicylate poisoning since solutions are typically highly concentrated. This can be a hazard for small children.
