Description

Sia et al reported the ABCD score to triage a COVID-19 patient into severe and non-severe disease. This is suitable for a resource limited setting. The authors are from Sarawak General Hospital in Kuching, Malaysia.

ABCD is based on the first letter of the parameters.

Patient selection: COVID-19 prior to admission

Parameters:

(1) age in years (A)

(2) body mass index in kg per sq m (B)

(3) comorbidity (C), such as ischemic heart disease, diabetes, chronic kidney disease, malignancy, asthma, or COPD

(4) day of illness (D)

Interpretation:

• minimum score: 0

• maximum score: 5

• The higher the score the greater the risk of severe COVID.

• A score >= 2 has the highest Youden index (sensitivity 0.61, specificity 0.88) for severe disease.

Performance:

• The area under the ROC curve is 0.82
