Description

Young described a syndrome in males with infertility and recurrent sinopulmonary infections secondary to thickened mucus.

Criteria for the diagnosis of Young's syndrome:

(1) azoospermia due to obstruction of the vasa deferentia by viscus mucus (obstructive azoospermia)

(2) recurrent sinusitis

(3) recurrent bronchitis leading to bronchiectasis

(4) exclusion of cystic fibrosis and Kartagener's syndrome (primary ciliary dysfunction)

Additional findings:

(1) normal motility in sperm retrieved from the testis

(2) nasal polyps

The frequency of its diagnosis is decreasing. Some possible explanations may include:

(1) discontinuation of calomel (mercurous chloride) in pediatrics

(2) better ways of diagnosing cystic fibrosis

(3) unfamiliarity by clinicians with the disorder
