Description

Mazeh et al developed a nomogram which can be used during surgery to determine if another hyperfunctioning parathyroid gland is present. This can be used in conjunction with the change in serum parathyroid hormone levels to determine if surgery needs to be continued. The authors are from the University of Wisconsin.

Parameters:

(1) preoperative serum calcium in mg/dL

(2) preoperative serum parathyroid hormone (PTH) in pg/dL

(3) parathyroid gland weight in milligrams

Wisconsin index =

= (preoperative serum calcium) * (preoperative serum PTH)

The percent of patients with another enlarged parathyroid gland can be estimated from a plot of the parathyroid gland weight and risk group (Figure 5, page 140). The curves can be approximated by.
