Description

A person may become a sex worker for a number of reasons.


 

Economic:

(1) runaway or orphan without family

(2) sold by parents into prostitution

(3) lack of alternative skills

(4) poor and unable to find other work

(5) perception as an easy way to make a living

(6) desertion by spouse or inability to marry

 

Violent coercion:

(1) human trafficking

(2) pimp or organized crime organization

 

Drug addiction

 

Societal:

(1) cultural or familial acceptance

(2) societal rejection

 

Psychological:

(1) reaction to childhood abuse

(2) poor self-esteem or feelings of self-worth

(3) unrealistic expectations
