Description

A creative person (writer, artist, designer) may occasionally be unable to create at certain times. Often it is transient but occasionally it can be permanent.


 

Synonym: white page syndrome (when faced with a blank page), writer’s block

 

Features:

(1) The person wants to start on a project.

(2) The person is unable to start or else starts but quickly stops.

(3) The person may be unable to proceed despite effort (“paralysis”).

(4) The failure causes the person distress.

 

Conditions associated with inhibited creativity:

(1) depression and/or anxiety

(2) perfectionism

(3) burnout

(4) lack of ability (which may be a point of anxiety)

(5) condition associated with cognitive impairment

(6) other medical illness
