Many dog bites can be handled by the primary care physician, but some should be referred to a specialist.
Reasons to refer a dog-bite victim to a specialist:
(1) systemic signs of infection
(2) severe cellulitis
(3) infection refractory to standard oral therapy
(4) wounds affecting tendon, joint or bone
(5) wounds affecting the head and/or face, especially in an infant
(6) serious hand or foot wounds
(7) serious genital wounds
(8) bites requiring reconstructive surgery
Additional reasons for seeking advice:
(1) vicious or traumatic attack with significant risk of post-traumatic stress disorder
