Description

Natural gas is odorless. Gas utilities add a chemical that has a characteristic odor which is used to warn people of a possible gas leak. If you smell this odor then you should immediately take action.


 

General recommendations:

(1) Assume that there is a major problem until proven otherwise.

(2) Remove any possible source of ignition (see below).

(3) If there is an obvious source for the gas that can be closed down safely then do so.

(4) Evacuate everyone from the area immediately.

(5) Call the gas company from a safe distance.

(6) Do not re-enter the affected area until told that it is safe to do so.

 

Sources of natural gas:

(1) defective gas appliance

(2) break in the gas line, including digging in the yard

(3) earthquake or landslide

(4) intentional release

(5) children playing

 

Possible sources that can ignite gas:

(1) open flame and lit matches

(2) cigarettes, cigars or pipes

(3) cellular or regular phones (do not call the gas company in an area with leaking gas)

(4) electrical tools, toys or appliances

(5) gas powered tools

(6) running motor vehicles

(7) electrical switches

(8) stoves or furnaces
