Description

A forest fire or wildfire can be dangerous and move rapidly. A person caught outside can survive them if proper steps are taken.

Steps:

(1) Try to find a large open area with sparse fuel. If possible select a ditch, roadway or other excavated spot.

(2) If on a mountain or hillside, select the downward slope on a side away from the fire and the wind.

(3) Clear as much fuel as possible from around the spot.

(4) Try to find something to cover your entire body that is nonflammable and which will not melt. For example large flat stones can be placed over a ditch.

(5) Lie face down and cover your body with the covering material.

(6) Stay down until the fire has gone and the surround area has cooled down.

Avoid:

(1) Canyons, saddles, chimneys or other locations that channel the wind and make the fire more intense.

(2) Avoid getting caught in a dead end where there is no means of escape.
