The absorption of a transdermal drug can be enhanced by certain actions.
Features of administering a drug for optimum transdermal absorption:
(1) apply over a large surface area
(2) leave in place for a prolonged period of time
(3) apply with an occlusive dressing, which prevents loss of the drug and makes sure that the skin is well-hydrated
(4) apply to skin with a thin stratum corneum
(5) apply with a chemical or physical method that enhances absorption
The absorption of a transdermal drug may be excessive if the skin is cracked or ulcerated.
