Description

Scheltens et al described a visual rating scale for atrophy of the medial temporal lobe. This is less time consuming to perform than performing volumetry of the hippocampus.

MRI Imaging: midsagittal T1 weighted images

Parameters:

(1) width of the choroid fissure

(2) width of the temporal horn

(3) height of the hippocampal formation

Interpretation:

• The absence of significant atrophy is against the diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease.

• The presence of significant atrophy can identify a patient with mild cognitive impairment who is likely to progress to Alzheimer's disease.
