Description

Bertges et al reported a cardiac risk index (CRI) for patients undergoing vascular surgery. This can help to identify patients who may benefit from more aggressive management or an alternative procedure. The authors are from the Vascular Study Group (VSG) of New England.

Patient selection: elective or urgent vascular surgery

Outcome: adverse in-hospital cardiac events (acute myocardial infarction, heart failure, significant arrhythmia)

Parameters:

(1) age in years

(2) coronary artery disease (CAD)

(3) congestive heart failure (CHF)

(4) COPD

(5) serum creatinine n mg/dL

(6) smoking

(7) insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus

(8) long-term beta-blocker therapy

(9) history of coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) or percutaneous intervention (PCI) procedures

Interpretation:

• minimum score: -1

• maximum score: 15

• The higher the score the greater the risk of an adverse cardiac event.
