Description

Alderson and McGall developed a self-administered hand function questionnaire than can be used to assess function in patients with the carpal tunnel syndrome. The score can be followed over time to monitor disease status and response to interventions. The authors are from St. Joseph's Hospital in Ontario, Canada.

The instrument asks about the ability to perform 56 activities.

total score =

= SUM(points for all applicable activities)

Interpretation:

• minimum score: number of applicable activities = 56 for 56 activities

• maximum score: (number of applicable activities) * 7 = 392 for 56 activities

• The higher the score, the greater the functional ability of the person.

percent of maximal functional ability =

= ((patient's score) – (number of applicable activities)) / ((maximal score for applicable activities) – (number of applicable activities)) * 100%
