Description

Arts and crafts projects can be fun for children. However, some project materials may be unsuitable for children (or even adults). Proper selection and use of materials can ensure hazard-free play.


 

Guidelines for use of arts and crafts materials:

(1) Children are properly supervised when in use.

(2) Only supplies known (not assumed) to be safe are used.

(3) Steps are taken to prevent sharps injury.

(4) All finishing and clean-up supplies are known safe.

(5) Materials are inaccessible when not in use.

(6) Steps are taken to reduce exposure to materials.

 

Safe supplies should:

(1) be in the original containers

(2) be completely labeled with contents and instructions for use

(3) been confirmed as safe, as indicated by conforming to ASTM D4236 and/or bearing safety seals of the ACMI (Arts & Creative Materials Institute)

(4) not be labeled as unsafe for children or kept out of reach by children

(5) not be labeled with: Poison, Danger, Warning, Caution

(6) not be labeled with a "Skull and Crossbones" or other toxin icon

(7) not show hazard warnings on the label

 

Sharps safety:

(1) Avoid pointed scissors.

(2) Avoid knives and razors.

(3) Use scissors designed for children.

(4) Use thicker, softer paper products to avoid paper cuts

(5) Avoid use of paper cutters.

 

Possible toxins in finishing and clean-up supplies:

(1) solvents

(2) caustic agents in household chemicals

(3) toxic byproducts (such as chlorine gas) when mixed

 

Steps to reduce exposure:

(1) Skin coverings to reduce exposure.

(2) Wash up immediately upon completion.
