Description

A foreign body may be inserted into the male urethra, resulting in a number of complications.


 

Reasons for insertion:

(1) autoeroticism (especially in adolescent)

(2) dementia or mental retardation

(3) sadomasochism or fetish

(4) curiosity in a small child

(5) psychosis or severe mental illness

 

Almost anything can and has been inserted.

 

Reasons why a person may not admit to the insertion:

(1) too embarrassed

(2) intoxicated at the time

(3) demented and confused

 

Complications may include:

(1) pain, especially when voiding

(2) urinary retention

(3) urethral fistula

(4) migration of the foreign body into the urinary bladder

(5) inability to remove

(6) infection (urethritis, cystitis, periurethral abscess, cellulites, etc)

(7) hematuria

(8) swelling of the external genitalia

(9) urethral diverticulum

(10) urethral stricture
