Description

Bruce et al identified risk factors for impaired mobility in a patient with Type 2 diabetes. These can help to identify a patient who may benefit from more aggressive management to prevent disability. The authors are from Fremantle Hospital and the University of Western Australia.

Patient selection: Type 2 diabetes

Risk factors for impaired mobility:

(1) older age (will use age >= 60 years in the implementation)

(2) peripheral neuropathy

(3) history of stroke (cerebrovascular disease)

(4) insulin therapy

(5) microalbuminuria

(6) arthritis

(7) failure to exercise

(8) living alone (not being married)

(9) current smoker

The more risk factors that are present the more likely that the patient will have impaired mobility.
