Description

Tullio phenomenon is an unusual response to a loud noise or changes in middle ear pressure.


 

Features of Tullio's phenomenon

(1) sudden onset of disequilbrium/vertigo or oscillopsia/nystagmus

(2) triggered by a loud sound or change in middle ear pressure (as during a Valsalva maneuver)

(3) exclusion of alternative explanations (seizures, spasms, etc)

 

It may be associated with:

(1) dehiscence of the of the superior semicircular canal

(2) osteoma of the middle ear

(3) congenital middle ear defects

(4) cochlear implantation
