Description

Some travelers view a trip away from home as an opportunity to have sex without commitment and to be uninhibited. Like Russian roulette, sometimes you are lucky and sometimes you are not, and when you are not it can be very bad news.

Sex partners for a traveler or tourist may be:

(1) fellow travelers

(2) local residents

(3) local professional sex-workers

Different scenarios:

(1) just out to have fun, started partying and got carried away

(2) business person or worker who is on the road a lot

(3) repressed sexuality at home (homosexual, middle aged woman)

(4) deviant, exploitative and predatory (sex tourists, pedophiles)

Risks:

(1) physical assault (getting mugged)

(2) sexual assault (getting raped), which may include use of a "date rape" drug

(3) getting arrested

(4) HIV

(5) hepatitis B

(6) other sexually transmitted diseases (STD) including gonorrhea, syphilis, pubic lice, chlamydia, chancroid, etc.

(7) other infectious diseases (amebiasis, tuberculosis, dermatophyte, etc.)

Risk factors for a serious outcome:

(1) intoxication and drug abuse

(2) coming from a relatively sheltered health environment with limited risks

(3) failure to use a condom with all sexual encounters

(4) failure to use contraception

Preventive measures:

(1) Becoming aware of the potential hazards of uninhibited behavior.

(2) Learning the risk of acquiring HIV and sexually transmitted diseases at each destination.

(3) Receiving hepatitis B vaccination.

(4) Having or receiving HIV prophylaxis immediately after a high risk encounter.

(5) Being evaluated for STD on return, especially after consorting with sex workers.

(6) Abstinence or protected sex on return pending medical evaluation and incubation.
