Description

HIV-positive patients are at risk for serious infections with toxoplasmosis. Steps to avoid exposure to the parasite can help protect against infection, especially in patients who are negative for IgG antibody to toxoplasma.


 

General recommended steps:

(1) Never eat raw or undercooked meat, especially pork, lamb or venison.

(2) Meat should be cooked to an internal temperature of 150°F (65.5°C); meat that is cooked until it is no longer pink inside generally has reached a temperature of 165°F (73.8°C).

(3) Wash hands after contact with raw meat.

(4) Wash hands after contact with soil.

(5) Wash fruits and vegetables well before eating them raw.

 

If the patient is a cat owner or has contact with cats:

(1) The litter box should be changed daily, preferably by an HIV-negative, nonpregnant person.

(2) The patient should wash the hands thoroughly after contact with the litter box.

(3) The cat should be kept indoors.

(4) Contact with stray cats should be avoided.

(5) Cats should be fed dried or canned commercial food, or well-cooked table food.

(6) Cats should not be fed raw or undercooked meat.

(7) Patients may keep their cats provided they adhere to the recommendations.

(8) Testing of cats for toxoplasmosis is not recommended.
