The Patient’s Perception of Intensity of Urgency Scale (PPIUS) can be used to evaluate a patient with overactive bladder. It can be recorded in a personal diary each time that the patient urinates.
Instructions:
(1) The patient keeps a diary of urination episodes.
(2) Each episode is scored using the PPIUS (scale from 0 to 4).
(3) At the end of the day all of the PPIUS readings are added together.
Parameters:
(1) daily total PPIUS scores
(2) number of days being evaluated
TUS = mean daily PPIUS score =
= SUM(daily PPIUS scores) / (number of days)
Interpretation:
• A person without overactive bladder will have a TUS at or near zero.
• A patient with severe OAB could have a TUS > 50 (upper limit affected by frequency of urination).
