Description

The ratio of thoracic circumference to abdominal circumference is constant throughout pregnancy. In infants with pulmonary hypoplasia, there is a relative decline in the thoracic circumference, resulting in reduction in the ratio. Calculating the ratio is important in instances of oligohydramnios or premature rupture of membranes.

thoracic circumference to abdominal circumference ratio =

= (thoracic circumference in cm) / (abdominal circumference in cm)

Interpretation:

• normal ratio 0.94 +/- 0.05

• infants with pulmonary hypoplasia have ratio < 0.89
