A number of factors can impact the outcome of medical tourism. Many things can go horribly wrong, which can be made worse by being a stranger in a strange land.


 

Things that can go wrong for a medical tourist:

(1) development of serious complications following the procedure

(2) travel-related complications, especially on the return trip

(3) exposure to infectious diseases or other hazards

(4) limited or no legal recourse for malpractice

(5) potential for poor follow-up

(6) inability to get insurance coverage for followup care

(7) use of substandard or defective materials, medicines, etc.
