Description

Fireworks can cause significant burns, especially if they ignite within clothing. The clothing keeps the flames and thermal load close to the skin. Although this may appear comic in movies, these can result in serious injuries.

Typical situation:

(1) The usual subject is a young male.

(2) The usual occasion is a time for celebration.

(3) The fireworks are usually in a pant's pocket.

(4) The pocket acts to limit access to the burning firework.

Burns involving a hand are common.

Other areas burned depend the location of the fireworks. Fireworks in a back pants pocket may burn the buttocks and lower back. Fireworks in a front pants pocket can burn the groin and genitals. Fireworks in a shirt pocket can burn the chest, neck and face.

The burning gunpowder can generate very high temperatures which can result in severe burns.

Risk factors for serious injury:

(1) ignition of a large number of fireworks

(2) intoxication

(3) location near the genitals

(4) delay in putting out the flames

(5) flammable clothing

(6) trauma associated with fall injury or accident caused by the person's response to the fire

(7) trying to handle the burning fireworks with the hands

Fireworks should never be carries in clothing. They should be carried in a separate, fireproof container.
