Description

The U.S. Public Health Service has developed a clinical practice guideline for primary health care providers to treat tobacco use. The selection of interventions depends on an initial triage of a patient based on current tobacco use.

Target population: any adolescent or adult patient presenting to any health care facility

Initial question: Does the patient now use tobacco?

Second level question: If the patient is currently using tobacco, then is the patient willing to quit?

(1) If yes, then provide appropriate tobacco dependence treatment.

(2) If no, then promote motivation to quit.

Second level question: If the person is not currently using tobacco, then has the patient ever used tobacco?

(1) If yes, then intervene to prevent relapse.

(2) If no, then encourage continued abstinence.

where:

• The intervention required to prevent relapse in a person who has stopped smoking varies with the time since stoppage. Maintaining abstinence after the first year is less of a problem, except during times of exceptional stress.
