Mechanical bull riding involves sitting on a mechanical device that twists and gyrates to simulate a bucking bull. It can result in a variety of traumatic injuries. The activity was popularized in the movie "Urban Cowboy".
Criteria for the urban cowboy syndrome:
(1) mechanical bull riding
(2) traumatic injury
(3) intoxication
Orthopedic injuries may include sprains, dislocations and fractures.
(1) fall-related, usually involving the upper extremity, head or face
(2) hand and upper extremity joint injuries related to the twisting and holding on
(3) hip and groin injuries, including straddle injury and a groin pull
(4) lower back pain
Other injuries:
(1) hematomas
(2) genital and/or urethral trauma
(3) rhabdomyolysis with myoglobinuria
(4) aspiration
