The University of Texas (UT) wound classification system is a simple method for describing a diabetic foot lesion. It correlates with the risk of amputation and the chance for ulcer healing.
Appearance of Wound |
Grade |
preulcerative change, or post-healing |
0 |
superficial wound, not involving tendon, joint capsule or bone |
1 |
wound penetrating to tendon or joint capsule, but not bone |
2 |
wound penetrating to bone or into joint |

A |

nonischemic |
B |

ischemic |
C |

D |
Interpretation:
• The risk of amputation increases for Stages B and D, but not C.
• The healing time for the ulcer increases stepwise for each Stage.
• The chances for healing decrease with each higher Stage.
Performance:
• The UT system was a better predictor for outcome than the Wagner classification system.
