Description

Smolen et al reported a simplified disease activity index for a patient with rheumatoid arthritis. This can be used to monitor a patient over time and to evaluate the response to therapy. The authors are from multiple universities in Europe and North America.

Parameters

(1) tender joint count from 0 to 28

(2) swollen joint count from 0 to 28

(3) patient global assessment using a Likert scale from 0 (normal) to 10 (extreme activity)

(4) physician global assessment using a Likert scale from 0 (normal) to 10 (extreme activity)

(5) C-reactive protein (CRP) in mg/dL

simplified disease activity index = SDAI =

= SUM(points for all 5 parameters)

clinical disease activity index = CDAI =

= SUM(points for the first 4 parameters)

Interpretation:

• minimum SDAI and CDAI: 0

• maximum SDAI: around 100

• maximum CDAI: 76

• The higher the indices the greater the disease activity.
